McAlester
Immigrants and Oklahomans working together.
Our story is Oklahoma’s story.
McAlester was named in honor of a James J. McAlester’s trading post. Industrial activities, like coal mining, contributed to the expanding McAlester as a center of commerce. The coal industry also contributed to the influx of immigrant coal miners from across Europe and North America, leaving McAlester with a unique melting pot of nationalities unlike anywhere else in Oklahoma. Since then, the citizens of McAlester use their strong work ethic to grow assets like the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant to support America's soldiers.
