In the summer of 1931, Oklahoma was in the throes of the Great Depression. Overproduction had long been a curse in the oil fields, but the plunging prices for crude reached a breaking point. Determined to preserve the state's natural resource and true to his colorful and oftentimes controversial reputation, Governor "Alfalfa" Bill Murray declared martial law, calling out the National Guard to set a perimeter around around wells in 27 oil fields.
