Hello Girl
When Mattie Beal's name was the second drawn in the Kiowa-Comanche land lottery on July 29, 1901, the life of the 21-year-old Wichita telephone operator, or "Hello Girl," and the community of Lawton were changed in an instant. Now the owner of 160 acres of prime real estate, her generous spirit and gregarious personality made her the belle of early Lawton society. Mattie commuted a portion of her property so that frustrated settlers who had failed to acquire land in the lottery could purchase affordable homesites and remain in the area. She also donated land for parks and schools, and was benevolent in promoting culture in the city. This week on LoyalTV, join us in Lawton for a look back at the life of Lawton's first lady, Mattie Beal.
